Although the walls are stunning the top of the reef is a consistent 70 feet or more, so Nitrox really is the way to go on this side. Crossroads is a perfect example of this. Doc Poulson - A 70-foot cable-laying ship sunk in 1981 next to Mitch Millers Reef, the Doc Poulson is a picturesque shallow dive great for beginners and second of two tank dives. Intact and safe to penetrate, the wreck is encrusted with tiny patches of brain corals, sea fans and sea rods and tended by a crew of slippery dick wrasse, parrotfish and angelfish. Ghost Mountain - A stunning dive on the North West side of the island. For the majority of the year this site is too rough to dive, but when it settles down this is the place to dive. It is situated close to one of the natural channels in the barrier reef that surrounds the island so much of the time, sadly, the visability in the shallows is not that great. However if you swim off the wall a pinnacle will appear out of the haze. This is how it gets its name Ghost Mountain. Tube sponges, whip coral, fans and amazing fish life cover the mountain. This is a must do dive - Always a DNS favorite!

Governors Reef - Is named after the Governors house and beach that are opposite this site. The reef offers a very shallow dive profile and at the base of the pin is a large section of reef that extends both north and south. It has interesting channels and grooves cut into the hard pan areas that allow for all sorts of little creatures to make their homes here. Again, this is a great shallow west side dive site.

Great House Wall - Great House Wall is named for the Great House Condominiums that are directly in front of this dive site. The wall here has a pretty cascading effect to it as it drops deeper. There are no special features along this area of the wall but the general scenery is stunning. This site is a favorite for the turtles and we can almost always find some eels here. There are also some fingers that run into the shallow for some extended bottom times.

Hammerhead Hill - This is slightly different than most of the North Wall dive sites. The pin is actually set in a large coral formation that looks like a large hill surrounded by sand, the hill itself is a fantastic spot for large and small marine life. The top of the hill is about 50 feet and at the bottom you can easily reach 75,where the wall is a short swim away. This site offers many crevices that commonly hold colonies of lobsters. In addition, there are always large numbers of parrotfish and eagle rays often spotted in this area. A DNS tip - enjoy the excellent coral growth, but keep your eyes open .

Hammerhead Hole - formally named Shark Hole due to the chance of encountering a Hammerhead shark! This site is notably different from most of the dive sites on the West side. Instead of following coral fingers out to the wall and back, this particular site consists of several coral heads that form a type of mini-wall. There are lots of overhangs and edges for all sorts of marine life to call home. So take your time and don't overlook anything.

Harbor Heights - Harbor Heights is another one of Cayman's sites named after the condo that it sits in front of. There are a series of sites that sit somewhat on a mini wall with smaller coral fingers running out to the wall. It is a very shallow dive with the maximum of about 60 feet if you really work at it, but most of the dive you can stay around 40. There is plenty to see here from the lemon rays burrowed in the sand to schooling mahogany snappers around the line.

In Between- two huge ledges are at the bottom of the mooring line on this dive. As you continue North along the wall there is a swim through that is filled with orange sponges and gorgonians. This is the perfect turn around point in the dive and follows the top of the wall back to the mooring pin.

Japanese Gardens - This is a favorite among dive masters and local divers. This site is one of two sites on the south side that are often interchanged, Japanese Gardens and Oriental Gardens. The sites are side by side and get there names from the elk-horn coral that grows so rapidly on the south side. Underwater it resembles a bonsai forest with there perfectly groomed trees. Both of these sites have several outstanding caverns that you have to do when you are here.

Kents Caves - is a shallow dive on the southwest tip of Sand Key. Although this dive is probably one of the best dives on the south side of the island it is one of the least dived areas due to the current. There are actually two pins in this area and both are spectacular. The reef system is cut with tunnels and huge caverns that have groupers and snappers residing in them. Large numbers of horse-eyed jacks collect here which can make a stunning backdrop for your photos.

Lone Star Ledges - a very nice shallow site that offers some great bottom times due to its depth. South of the mooring pin are the ledges. They are said to be a cave that fresh water from the island flows out from and indeed after a good rain you can see a definite haze in the water near the caves. It is named after the famous Lone Star restaurant that has been a local dive master hangout for years.

Main Street - The wall is steeper and deeper than most in the area and you need to keep an eye on your profile as the entry onto the wall wants to pull you deeper. Just East of the pin is a nice swim though that tops 110 feet. It is a great section of the North wall but it limits your bottom time. This site is home to some large coral formations and sightings of turtles are not uncommon.

Schooling grunts, barracuda, jack, snappers, and hinds cover the reef. Along with parrot fish, flamingo tongues, and file fish under every ledge. The shallow depths and abundant marine life make this site very popular.

Mitch Miller Reef - Mitch Miller was a top recording artist and producer for Columbia Records during the 50's and 60's and made Grand Cayman his home. Pallas Wreck Reef - this wreck was a Norwegian steel-hulled brigantine sunk in 1903 after she hit a reef. Through the years she has been broken up and rusted away. You can still see some of the ribs projecting out of the water as they sit on top of the barrier reef. The ocean swell is quite strong in this area so care should be taken when diving in this area. The overhangs and channels provide some great swim throughs.

Princess Penny's Pinnacle - a single large pinnacle stands like a watchtower between the wall and the abyss. Manned by a shy green moray eel, the pinnacle top sprouts deep-water gorgonians and sea rods. Plates of sheet coral, mounding star, brain and cup corals cover the wall like a knights armor and tube sponges poke out like cannons. The top of the wall swarms with juvenile reef fish, blue tang and the rare indigo hamlet. Look for coral grottoes and goby cleaning stations at the crests and keep an eye open for spotted eagle rays and hawks-bill turtles cruising in from the deep.

Spanish Anchor - A great shallow site. The second of the two sites associated with a Spanish Galleon, there is a huge anchor on this site carbon dated back to the 1700s and at first glance is very hard to spot due to being encrusted with coral. Then you notice a perfect straight line of coral and the anchor becomes quite apparent. At the pin, this dive is only 40 feet and the shallow finger runs all the way out to the Wall, slowly getting deeper with lots of things to see on the trip out and back. Long ago fisherman used to come to these calm waters to clean their catch of the day before bringing them to market. The stingrays have picked up on this through the years and found it an easy way to score a free meal. Over time the stingrays have become fearless of man to the point that we can feed and interact with them daily. Nothing can prepare you for this pure rush of adrenaline as you first plunge into the water with Stingrays all around you. Three Trees - This is a great shallow site with skinny fingers that run out to the wall. You can cover some great distances on this dive if you try for all the coral fingers but we usually dive one finger and take nice and slow to concentrate on the amazing marine life. As again, it is great macro photography. It also has some great sand area for the yellow-headed jawfish if you have the patience to wait for him to come out of his hole.

Wreck of the Oro Verde - the Oro Verde was a steel liberty ship that was scuttled off the west shore of Grand Cayman in May of 1980, after being impounded as a drug smuggling ship. Through the years she has been battered by many hurricanes and now has become a debris field close to Paradise Reef. Although she no longer resembles the mighty ship she once was, she has become a home to a large collection of fish life. This site is also a very popular night dive site for its ease of navigation and quality of marine life. DNS tip - do ask the crew to recite the story of this ship and why there are a number of mountain bikes.
